Common Names: Amber Jackfruit, Jaca
Amber jackfruit is famous because the fruit is not just sweet, it has a deep apricot or amber-coloured flesh that tastes like a mix of bubblegum, banana, and pineapple. It is much better than the common ones you see in shops because it has very little sticky latex, making it way easier to open and eat without getting your hands a mess.
Comes from a parent tree that is dwarfing and better tasting still.
Features:
Ideal prune height range: 2-4m
pH growing conditions: 6.0 to 7.5
Shade or full sun: Shade until 2m
Minimum pot year 5: 100L pot or in the ground
Time to fruit age: 3-5 years for grafted trees
These trees grow fast and love the heat, but they hate having wet feet in winter. If you plant one, make sure the soil drains well, just like you would for an avocado. They are evergreen with big, shiny leaves that look great in any garden. You can eat the fruit fresh, or use the seeds—just boil or roast them and they taste exactly like chestnuts.
Interesting Notes:
The Amber variety is highly prized in markets for its firm texture and amazing smell. Like most jackfruits that can produce high-quality fruit even if grown from a seed.
