Persea americana ‘Hass’ – Also known as Commercial Avocado or Standard Avocado
Hass is the world’s most popular avocado variety, known for its creamy, nutty flavour and consistent productivity. The rough, pebbly skin darkens from green to black when ripe, making harvest timing easy. It’s a vigorous, upright tree that can be pruned to maintain a compact form and is well suited to backyard growing in warm climates with good drainage.
Features
Ideal prune height: 2–4m
pH range: 5.5–6.5
Sun preference: 20% shade ideal in Perth
Minimum pot size year 5: 45L
Time to fruit: 3–5 years from graft
Harvest period: Late autumn to winter
Notable traits: Heavy bearer, pebbly black skin, creamy texture, good shelf life
Hass thrives in deep, well-drained soil with protection from strong wind and frost. Regular feeding with organic mulch and trace minerals boosts fruiting. While it’s a type A flower, pairing it with a type B (like Bacon or Fuerte) can increase yield. Water deeply during flowering and fruit development, and avoid waterlogging at all costs.
If you only grow one avocado, make it Hass — the rich flavour, long harvest window, and proven reliability make it a must-have.
