Photo display only. Black Madeira is widely considered the best tasting fig in the world. It is the holy grail for collectors because of its intense, high quality flavour. The fruit is medium sized with a dark purple to black skin and a deep red, jammy interior. It tastes like a thick berry conserve with a perfect balance of sweetness and acidity.
Features:
Ideal prune height range: 2-3m
pH growing conditions: 6.0 to 7.5
Shade or full sun: Full sun (loves heat)
Minimum pot year 5: 50L pot
Time to fruit age: 2-3 years
This variety is famously slow growing and can be a bit finicky compared to RDB. It needs a long, hot summer to ripen its fruit properly, making it perfect for the Perth climate. It is a late season fig, usually ripening from February through to April. While it takes more patience to establish, the reward is a gourmet fruit that is unmatched in quality.
Interesting Notes:
Black Madeira is often confused with Figo Preto,* as they are very similar in looks and taste. It is highly sought after and usually sells out instantly. Because it is a premium variety, it is best suited for growers who are happy to give it a little extra attention and the sunniest spot in the garden.
