Common Names: Bilimbi, Cucumber Tree, Tree Sorrel
Bilimbi is a more tropical fruit tree relation to the starfruit. Much punchier, sour flavour. The fruit grows in clusters directly on the trunk and branches, looking like small green cucumbers. It is a must-have for anyone who loves making authentic pickles, curries, or sharp refreshing drinks.
Features:
Ideal prune height range: 2-4m
pH growing conditions: 5.5 to 6.5
Shade or full sun: Full sun (protect from frost and wind in Perth)
Minimum pot year 5: 50L pot
Time to fruit age: 3-5 years
The tree has beautiful fern-like leaves that fold up at night. It loves the heat but needs a spot sheltered from the afternoon wind and winter chill. In Perth, it does best in a pot or a very warm, protected corner of the garden or greenhouse to keep it happy through the cooler months.
Interesting Notes:
The fruit is famous for its high acidity, making it perfect for cleaning or as a natural meat tenderiser. The bright red flowers are also edible and can be made into a sweet preserve or syrup.
This is a rare find for collectors and a heavy producer once established.
