Common Names: Bottle Moringa, Madagascar Moringa
Bottle Moringa is a rare and striking tree that develops a thick, swollen trunk to store water. It is a very ornamental and uncommon. A little shade helps this one handles the heat in Perth with ease. The leaves are technically edible and extremely high in nutrients, but science hasn't caught up fully with this one. Most people grow it for the unique look of the bottle-shaped trunk and the "nuts", oversized Moringa drumstick which is very high in fats.
Features:
Ideal prune height range: 3-5m
pH growing conditions: 6.0 to 7.5
Shade or full sun: a little shade
Minimum pot year 5: 70L pot
Time to fruit age: 5-8 years from seed
This tree thrives in well-draining soil. It grows fast in summer but goes dormant in winter, so you must keep it dry when the weather is cold. It is a great choice for a feature tree in a water-wise garden or as a large specimen in a pot.
Interesting Notes:
The tree literally loves typical Perth soil - prefers poor nutrient sandy soil even tolerates limestone heavy soil.
The trunk acts like a water tank, making it extremely drought tolerant. Like its cousins, the leaves can be eaten and the seeds are used for high-quality oil. It is a rare find for collectors who want a hardy tree with a prehistoric look.
This tree is a standout for any rare plant collection.
