Chinese Bayberry is a stunning tree that's stays green in winter. Amazing ornamental value and producing even more delicious fruit.
It's deep green leaves and rounded canopy make it attractive year-round.
The plum-sized fruit ripens to shades of deep red with a sweet flavour similar to raspberry and somewhat like a sweet pomegranate. Native to cooler climate of Asia, it’s a favourite in traditional gardens and rare fruit collections alike. Fruits fresh in early summer and often fetch high prices. Excellent fresh, dried, juiced, or fermented. Will do better in pots in Perth. Shade in summer.

Chinese Bayberry prefers well-drained, acidic soil rich in organic matter. In alkaline soils like Perth limestone, amend elemental sulphur. Mulch well and water regularly in dry spells. It dislikes waterlogging but enjoys steady moisture when fruiting. Female plants need to pollinate with a male. Aim for at least 3 to ensure a pollination grouping.
