Product Details
Botanical Name: Akebia quinata

Common Names: Chocolate Vine, Five-leaf Akebia

Chocolate Vine is a hardy climber that handles the Perth sheltered gardens well. It gets its name from the deep purple flowers that smell like light chocolate in spring. It grows fast and is great for covering fences or pergolas quickly.

Features:

Ideal prune height range: 3-6m (as a climber)

pH growing conditions: 6.0 to 7.0

Shade or full sun: Part shade

Minimum pot year 5: 45L pot

Time to fruit age: 3-5 years

Chocolate Vine is very tough and stays green most of the year in WA. It has pretty leaves in groups of five and grows best with a sturdy trellis to climb. While it can produce edible purple pods, it is mostly grown for its beautiful looks and scent. Prune it back after flowering to keep it tidy.

Interesting Notes:

The fruit pods have a soft white pulp that is mildly sweet. In some cultures, the skin is also fried and eaten. It is a great plant for birds and bees, making your garden feel alive.

Chocolate Vine is a top pick for gardeners wanting a fast-growing screen that smells amazing.

Limited stock. Pickup from Parkwood, WA. Delivery to Perth Metro only.
