Common Names: Chupa Chupa, South American Sapote
Chupa Chupa is a fast growing tree from the Amazon that looks like a tropical dream. It has huge heart shaped leaves that provide great shade. The fruit grows right on the trunk and tastes like a mix of mango, apricot and honey.
It is a rare gem for any Perth gardener who wants a lush look and sweet snacks. A greenhouse only fruit tree needed lots of humidity and can not withstand less than 3c.
Features:
Ideal prune height range: 4-6m
pH growing conditions: 5.5 to 7.0
Shade or full sun: Part shade, needs protection from hot wind
Minimum pot year 5: 90L pot
Time to fruit age: 5-7 years from seed
These trees love a drink and a feed. In Perth you must keep them out of the dry easterly winds or the big leaves will shred. They grow quick and enjoy a mulch heavy soil. While they like heat they need a bit of help with humidity in our dry summers. Give it a sheltered spot.
Interesting Notes:
The fruit has bright orange flesh that is very high in Vitamin C. It is called Chupa Chupa because that means suck suck in Spanish which is how you eat the juicy pulp. It is related to the cacao tree used to make chocolate.
