Coconut palms are the ultimate tropical icon and can grow in Perth if given a warm, sheltered microclimate. These trees love the heat and provide a beautiful tropical look to any garden. While they take a bit of extra care to establish in WA, the reward of home grown coconuts is worth the effort.

Coconut trees need sandy, well-draining soil and plenty of water during the summer months. They are very hungry plants and benefit from regular feeding with organic seaweed extracts and potassium. In Perth, it is best to plant them near a north-facing wall or among other trees to trap heat and protect them from cold winter winds.

Interesting Notes:

Coconuts are famous for their many uses, from fresh coconut water to rich cream and oil. The husk can be used as mulch to help the soil hold moisture. These trees are surprisingly salt tolerant and love a bit of sea mineral spray to mimic their natural coastal home.

Every part of the coconut is useful, making it a must-have for a productive tropical-style food forest.
