Coffea arabica is the most popular species of coffee worldwide, making up a significant portion of the global coffee trade. It is highly valued for its aromatic, complex, and less bitter flavour profile compared to other coffee species.

In the Perth climate, it's best grown in a protected, microclimate-rich location, such as a large pot that can be moved or a sheltered spot under a patio or pergola. Once 1.5m and bushy coffee tree can handle full sun in Perth in a dense garden.

It is an attractive, evergreen shrub that produces fragrant white flowers and small, red "cherries" containing the coffee beans. Can be eaten fresh too. The leaves make a lovely tea.

Arabica coffee plants are sensitive to frost and extreme heat, making Perth's climate medium difficult unless you have a great micro climate. Definately manageable with the right care. They require consistent moisture, particularly when flowering or fruiting, and rich, well-draining soil. The plant is self-pollinating, meaning a single plant can produce a harvest. The process of harvesting and processing the beans is a rewarding project for any dedicated home gardener.

Interesting Notes:

Coffee 'cherries' typically contain two seeds (the coffee beans). The best home coffee is made by letting the fruit ripen fully until deep red, then pulping, fermenting, drying, and roasting the beans.
