Jali Red Finger Lime — Citrus australasica ‘Jali Red’
Also called Australian fingerlime, bush caviar, red fingerlime
Jali Red is a compact Aussie native citrus with deep red to maroon rind and ruby caviar pearls that burst with tangy-lime flavour. Great in pots or hedged, tough in Perth heat once established, and a showpiece for cocktails, seafood, and desserts.
Features
• Ideal prune height: 1.2–2 m
• pH range: 5.5–6.5, slightly acidic is best
• Sun: full sun to light shade; fruiting best in sun
• Minimum pot size by year 5: 75 L
• Time to fruit: 1–2 years grafted, 3–4 years from seed
• Harvest period: roughly March–July in Perth
• Notable traits: red rind and pearls, high culinary value, thorny branches deter pests, generally self-fertile but heavier with cross-pollination
Growing and care
Plant in a sheltered, sunny spot with free-draining soil. Mix in compost and coarse sand; avoid waterlogging. Mulch well, keep roots cool, and water deeply in summer. Feed little and often with citrus food plus trace elements. Prune after harvest to shape and open the canopy; tip-prune for more flowering wood. Protect young plants from hot easterlies and frost. Suitable rootstocks include trifoliata and Flying Dragon for pots.
Why this plant
Jali Red gives premium, market-ready pearls at home with rich colour, strong lime punch, and steady crops on a small, easily managed tree. Perfect for patios, chefs, and native edible gardens.
