The Ginkgo tree (Ginkgo biloba), also called Maidenhair Tree, is a living fossil with fan-shaped leaves that turn brilliant gold in autumn. Known for its graceful, upright form and resistance to pests and urban pollution, this ancient species adds elegance to gardens and streetscapes alike. It's slow-growing, long-lived, and tolerant of a wide range of soil types, making it a strong performer in Perth’s climate.
Features:
Ginkgo grows best in deep, well-drained soils and thrives with regular watering while young. Once established, it's drought tolerant. Prune in winter to shape or manage size. Male trees are generally preferred in landscapes due to their clean growth, while female trees may produce fruit with a unique aroma.

How to Make Ginkgo Leaf Tea
1. Pick 4–6 fresh ginkgo leaves from a mature tree. Only use leaves in spring or autumn—avoid yellowed or insect-damaged ones. If using dried leaves, use 1 teaspoon.
2. Rinse leaves gently in cool water to remove dust or residue.
3. Chop or tear: Break into smaller pieces to release more of the active compounds.
4. Bring 250–300 ml of water to a boil, then let it cool for 1 minute (ideal temp: ~90°C).
5. Steep: Add ginkgo leaves to a teapot or cup. Pour in the hot water. Cover and let sit for 10–15 minutes.
6. Strain and drink: Strain out leaves. Drink warm. Can add honey, lemon myrtle or squeeze lemon to taste.
7. Dosage: Start with 1 cup daily. Do not exceed 2 cups unless under guidance, especially if taking blood thinners.
