J36 Jackfruit

Botanical Name: Artocarpus heterophyllus

Common Names: Jackfruit J36, Malaysian Honey Jackfruit

J36 is a top Malaysian variety that loves the sun and grows well in Perth if you give it a bit of care. The fruit is famous for being crunchy, bright yellow, and super sweet—almost like honey. It has very little sticky sap, so it is way easier to open and eat than other types. If you want a massive, tasty fruit that feels like a tropical treat, this is the one for your yard.

Ideal prune height range: 4-6m (can grow to 6m+ in Perth if left alone).

Shade or full sun: Full sun (at least 6-8 hours a day) after year 3. Green when under 2 m.

J36 trees grow fast and have big, glossy green leaves. In Perth, it is a good idea to keep them in a pot for an extra year before planting them in the ground so they get strong. They hate frost and cold wind, so find a warm, sunny spot for them. Use lots of mulch and give them plenty of water when they are flowering or growing fruit.

Interesting Notes:

The fruit is a total powerhouse of Vitamin C and potassium. While the ripe fruit is a sweet snack, you can also use the young green fruit as a meat substitute in cooking—it shreds just like pulled pork! Even the seeds can be boiled or roasted and eaten like chestnuts.
