Lemon Myrtle

Lemon Myrtle (Backhousia citriodora) is a highly aromatic native Australian tree valued for its intense lemon-scented leaves, which are used in teas, cooking, and natural remedies. It thrives in warm climates and is adaptable to both garden and pot cultivation, making it an excellent choice for home growers.

Lemon Myrtle grows best in well-draining soil and full sun but can tolerate part shade. It prefers a pH range of 5.5 to 7.5 and requires moderate watering. Once established, it is drought-tolerant but benefits from occasional deep watering during dry periods. The tree can be pruned to a manageable height, typically between 2 to 5 metres, or kept smaller in a pot.

This versatile tree is not only ornamental but also highly productive. The leaves contain high levels of citral, the compound responsible for their strong lemon aroma and flavour. They can be harvested year-round and are commonly used fresh or dried in herbal teas, marinades, and desserts.

Lemon Myrtle attracts beneficial insects and is relatively pest-resistant, though young trees may need protection from strong winds and frost. It thrives in a pot of at least 30 litres by year 5 and will begin producing leaves for harvest within its first few years.
