botanical name: Zingiber mioga
common names: Myoga Ginger, Japanese Ginger, Japanese Hardy Ginger
Myoga ginger is a fantastic cold hardy perennial for grower backyards. unlike standard supermarket ginger where you eat the underground root, myoga is grown for its crunchy, aromatic young shoots and pink flower buds that pop up at ground level in late summer. it has a mild zesty flavor, like a cross between fresh ginger, zesty citrus, and mild green onion. perfect for cool shady spots in food forests or potted gardens where standard ginger struggles.
features:
ideal height range: 1 to 1.2 metres
ph growing conditions: 6.0 to 7.0
shade or full sun: prefers dappled or partial shade
minimum pot year 5: 30L pot
time to harvest: 1 to 2 years from planting
myoga is super low maintenance once settled. it produces handsome tropical leafy stems through spring and summer before dropping its foliage and going completely dormant over winter. in late summer and early autumn, tasty thumb-sized pink buds push up directly out of the soil around the base of the plant. it tolerates frost much better than ordinary ginger and spreads gently to form a lush patch.
interesting notes:
the flower buds are a staple ingredient in japanese cooking, usually sliced razor thin to top cold noodle dishes, miso soup, tofu, or made into sweet vinegar pickles.
the young shoots can also be blanched and eaten like a vegetable.
unlike regular ginger roots which are underground, harvesting myoga buds is super easy because you pick them right off the surface of the soil without digging up the main plant.
