Diospyros kaki 'Nightingale
Nightingale Persimmon, Top-Shelf Persimmon
The Nightingale Persimmon is an astringent type that you eat when soft. The fruit gets a deep, rich reddish-orange colour when ripe. This variety is known for being extra sweet and producing loads of fruit, making it a proper gold-medal winner for the backyard.
Ideal prune height range: 3.5-4.5m
pH growing conditions: 6.0 to 7.0 (a bit neutral)
Shade or full sun: 50% shade for first 4 years is best here in Perth.
Minimum pot year 5: 90L pot.
Time to fruit age: 3-5 years from a grafted tree.
They drop all their leaves in winter, which lets the sun warm up the soil—great for winter veg planted underneath. In autumn, the leaves turn bright yellow, so it's a real stunner of a feature tree. It handles a bit of dry once established, but a good soak when the fruit is setting is crucial for a decent harvest.
Persimmons are known as 'fruit on a stick' after the leaves drop.
Interesting Notes:
The Nightingale fruit is a reliable producer, even if you only have one tree. It's chock-full of vitamins A and C and heaps of fibre, making it an absolute champion for a healthy snack.
Delivery to Perth Metro only. Too big for Aust post.
