Pindan Walnut is a hardy bush tucker tree from the Kimberley that loves sandy soil. It looks like a normal walnut on the outside but inside has a thick wood shell. The kernel inside tastes just like an almond when raw or like a cashew when you roast it. It is a great choice for a waterwise garden because it handles the heat and dry weather like a pro.

Pindan Walnuts are tough trees with cool corky bark that looks a bit like a jigsaw puzzle. They lose some leaves in the dry season and get small white or yellow flowers. In the wild they grow in the pindan sand dunes so they need very good drainage. You do not need to pick the fruit because it just falls off when it is ready to eat.

Interesting Notes:

These nuts are super foods. They have more protein and minerals than normal walnuts or macadamias. The shells are very hard so you will need a rock or a hammer to get to the tasty bit inside.

The tree is very rare in Perth gardens but grows well if you keep it away from heavy frost. It is a must have for anyone wanting a real Aussie food forest.
