Common Names: Pulasan
Pulasan is a close cousin to the rambutan but often tastes sweeter and is easier to peel. This ultra tropical tree is a rare find in Western Australia. It produces dark red or yellow fruit covered in short, stubby spikes. The flesh is succulent and separates easily from the seed. It is a prize for any rare fruit collector in Perth who can provide the right warm home for it.

Pulasan trees are very sensitive to cold and dry air. In Perth they must have a warm spot like a greenhouse or a very sheltered patio to survive winter. They love humidity and rich soil that drains well. These trees are for the dedicated gardener who wants to grow something truly exotic that most people have never seen. Perfect for Broome and Kimberly region.
Interesting Notes:
The name comes from the Malay word pulas which means to twist. This is because you twist the fruit open with your hands. The seeds are also edible and taste like almonds when roasted. It is less common than rambutan but many people think it tastes much better.
