Common Names: Red Dacca, Red Banana, Claret Banana
Red Dacca is the king of backyard bananas. It stands out with its thick maroon trunk and dark green leaves with red ribs. The fruit is short and fat with a deep red skin that turns orange/red when it is ready to eat. If you want a tropical look in Perth and a fruit that tastes better than anything in the shops, this is the tree for you.
Features:
2 m (dwarf)
pH growing conditions: 5.5 to 7.0
Shade or full sun: Shade in Perth
Minimum pot year 5: 75L to 100L (best in the ground)
Time to fruit age: 18-24 months
The fruit is the real prize. The flesh is a creamy pink or burgandy and tastes like a mix of banana and raspberry. It is much sweeter and softer than the yellow ones you see at the supermarket. These trees love a feed of manure and fertiliser and lots of water in the summer. They need a spot that is safe from strong winds so their big beautiful leaves do not get shredded.
Interesting Notes:
Red bananas are packed with more vitamin C and beta-carotene than yellow bananas. They are great for your eyes and your heart. In some countries, the leaves are used like natural plates or to wrap up fish for the barbecue. Because they are a bit shorter than some other types, they are easier to manage in a normal backyard.
This is a showstopper for any Perth food forest or pool area.
