Common Names: Rollinia, Biriba, Lemon Meringue Fruit
Rollinia is a fast growing tropical tree that loves the heat in Perth but needs shade for first 2 years. The fruit looks like a yellow cactus and tastes just like lemon meringue pie. It is soft, creamy, and very sweet. It is a must for any fruit lover who wants a taste of the tropics in their own backyard.
Features:
Ideal prune height range: 3-5m
pH growing conditions: 5.5 to 6.5
Shade or full sun: Full sun after 2 years but protect from strong wind
Minimum pot year 5: 90L pot
Time to fruit age: 3-4 years from seed
These trees grow much faster than other custard apples. They have large green leaves and need plenty of water and mulch during our dry summers. They handle the Perth sun well once they are a bit older, but give them around 50% shade when they are tiny.
Interesting Notes:
The fruit is best eaten fresh with a spoon straight from the skin. It is full of energy and vitamins to keep you healthy. Because the fruit is so soft, you rarely find it in shops, so growing your own is the best way to try it.
Rollinia is a showstopper in any garden and produces fruit quickly compared to other exotic trees.
