Prunus spinosa is a hardy, deciduous shrub prized for its striking spring blossoms and deep blue-black autumn fruit. Known as the Sloe or Blackthorn, it’s a tough, long-lived performer that thrives where other fruiting plants might struggle. Perfect for hedgerows, wildlife gardens, or the gin enthusiast, it offers both beauty and bounty. The tart, plum-like fruit naturally sweetens to a Brix of 6-9 as it ripens and can be softened and sweetened further to 10-13 by a quick spell in the freezer — perfect for Perth gardens where frosts are rare—ideal for jams, jellies, and of course, traditional sloe gin.
