Botanical Name: Averrhoa carambola
Common Names: B10 Starfruit, Carambola, Five Corner Fruit
B10 is a sweet starfruit from Malaysia that grows well in Perth. The fruit is juicy and lacks the sour bite of older types. It is a small tree with pretty pink flowers and weeping branches. It looks great in any backyard and produces heaps of yellow fruit.
Features:
Ideal prune height range: 2-4m
pH growing conditions: 5.5 to 6.5
Shade or full sun: Full sun but needs shade from hot afternoon wind
Minimum pot year 5: 60L pot
Time to fruit age: 2-3 years for grafted trees
B10 is a fast grower that loves water. Give it a good soak every day during a Perth summer. It is a heavy bearer so you will have plenty to share. Protect it from frost and strong winds to keep the leaves green. It is perfect for big pots or garden beds.
Interesting Notes:
The fruit is packed with vitamin C and the whole thing is edible. Slicing it makes perfect star shapes for snacks or salads. While it can fruit alone, having another starfruit nearby helps grow even more fruit.
