Common Names: Sunshine Blue, Southern Highbush Blueberry
Sunshine Blue is a compact, high-yielding blueberry variety perfect for Perth gardens. Unlike many blueberries, it tolerates warmer climates, less acidic soils than many others and mild winters, making it ideal for WA growers. It produces delicious, sweet berries with a slight tang, ripening over a long season. This self-pollinating variety is highly productive and thrives in pots or garden beds.
Features:
Ideal prune height range: 1–1.2 m
pH growing conditions: 5.0 to 6.5
Shade or full sun: Prefers 25-50% shade in Perth Metro
Minimum pot year 5: 30L pot
Time to fruit age: 1–2 years from planting
Sunshine Blue has attractive pink flowers in spring, followed by clusters of juicy blueberries. It’s a semi-evergreen plant, keeping its leaves through most of the year in mild winters. It’s highly adaptable, thriving in both sandy and loamy soils with good drainage. Regular watering and occasional acid-loving fertiliser will keep it thriving.
Interesting Notes:
Sunshine Blue is one of the few blueberries that can handle Perth’s soils better than most. Still, try to reduce the pH below 6.5. The plant is highly ornamental, making it a great choice for edible landscaping. Blueberries are packed with antioxidants and vitamin C, making them a healthy snack straight from the garden.
