Common Names: Walking Stick Palm
Walking Stick Palm is a small, hardy palm that grows naturally in the rainforests of eastern Australia. It is perfect for Perth gardens that have deep shade or limited space. This palm gets its name from the thin, straight stems which were once used to make walking sticks. It looks great in a pot or tucked into a shady corner.
Features:
Ideal prune height range: 2-3m
pH growing conditions: 5.5 to 6.5
Shade or full sun: Full shade only in Perth
Minimum pot year 5: 35L pot
Time to fruit age: 5-7 years
This palm is very slow growing but very tough once it settles in. It produces long spikes of small flowers followed by bright red berries that hang down in clusters. It loves a thick layer of mulch and regular water during a Perth summer. Because it stays small, it won't take over your yard and is a top choice for a tropical look under a patio.
Interesting Notes:
The red fruit is technically edible but mostly grown for its looks. The stems are very strong and flexible. It is one of the few palms that will thrive in a dark spot where other plants might struggle.
