White Pitanga is a very rare fruit tree. This dwarf type has fruit that tastes like a mix of honey and lemonade. I found these to be sweeter than blacks. It is a fantastic choice for Perth gardens as it handles our conditions well, giving you a unique and tasty fruit not found in shops.
Features:
Ideal prune height range: 1.5-2.5m
pH growing conditions: 5.5 to 6.5
Shade or full sun: Full sun to part shade in Perth Metro
Minimum pot year 5: 40L pot
Time to fruit age: 2-3 years from a grafted tree.
White Pitanga trees are compact and great for small spaces or growing in pots. They produce small white flowers followed by cream-white fruit that is different from the common red Pitanga. The tree is tough and drought-tolerant once it gets going, and it fruits for ages. It is a berry good choice for urban growers.
Interesting Notes:
The leaves give off a great spicy smell when crushed. Pitanga is a source of Vitamin C and antioxidants.
This white variety is extra special because of its unusual colour and amazing flavour. Grown from seed, they are 70–80% likely to be true to type. You may get a delightful pink tinge in the fruit or turn up more red like the common ones. Regardless, a seedling is very likely to be an improvement of the common red and much sweeter too.
White Pitanga is a real collector's plant and will make your food forest stand out.
