Common Names: Black Tahiti, Chocolate Sapote, Black Sapote, Chocolate Pudding Fruit
Black Tahiti is a premium cultivar of the Chocolate Sapote. A tropical evergreen tree that grows surprisingly well in Perth if you give it the right spot. The fruit is famous because the dark, creamy flesh looks and many say tastes just like chocolate pudding. It is perfect for backyard growers who want a unique, delicious fruit that you cannot find in most local supermarkets.
Features:
Ideal prune height range: 3-4m
pH growing conditions: 6.0 to 6.5
Shade or full sun: some shade for first 2 years, needs wind protection in Perth.
Minimum pot year 5: 50L pot
Time to fruit age: 3-5 years from a grafted tree
Black Tahiti trees have beautiful glossy dark green leaves and a dense canopy. They like plenty of water during our hot Perth summers and benefit from a thick layer of mulch to keep the roots cool. While they handle light frost once mature, young trees need protection during their first few winters.
Interesting Notes:
The fruit is picked while still green and hard, then ripens on the counter in a few days until it goes soft and olive-green. You can eat the pulp straight out of the skin with a spoon, mix it into ice cream, or use it as a healthy chocolate substitute in baking.
This variety is highly prized by rare fruit collectors and makes a brilliant feature tree for an orchard or suburban backyard.
