Botanical Name: Asimina triloba
Common Names: American Pawpaw, Pawpaw, Poor Man's Banana
The American pawpaw is a cold climate custard apple relative and rare fruit tree. It's the only tropical-style fruit that can handle the cold, but it still does well in cooler and sheltered parts of Perth. The fruit is yellow-green and tastes like a mix of mango, banana, and a bit of citrus. It's a must-have for any fruit collector or backyard grower looking for something different.
Features:
Ideal prune height range: 5-8m (can be kept smaller)
pH growing conditions: 5.5 to 7.0 (Slightly acid is best)
Shade: young plants need shade for the first couple of years. Mature trees fruit best in full sun.
Minimum pot year 5: 60L pot (They have a long taproot, so use a tall pot), better in the ground.
Time to fruit age: 4-7 years from seedling. It needs cold winters (chill hours) to fruit well, so it's one for the dedicated Perth growers.
The pawpaw is a small, deciduous tree. Its big leaves drop off in autumn, giving a stunning yellow display. The fruit is packed with vitamins and minerals like vitamin C and magnesium, and it's higher in protein than most fruit. It usually needs a second tree for good pollination.
Interesting Notes:
The pawpaw is famous for its smooth, creamy, custard-like flesh. It's Canada's and the USA's biggest native fruit. It's also super rich in antioxidants. Plant it somewhere protected from the harsh Perth winds.
Pawpaw is a beauty to add to any rare fruit collection or food forest.
