Botanical Name: Persea americana 'Reed'
Common Names: Reed Avocado
Reed is the king of backyard avocados for Perth growers. It is a large, round fruit that stays green when ripe. The flesh is buttery and rich with a nutty flavor that many people say is the best out of all the types. It is a great pick for smaller yards because the tree grows upright and narrow rather than spreading out too wide.
Features:
Ideal prune height range: 3-4m
pH growing conditions: 6.0 to 6.5
Shade or full sun: Full sun, but protect young stems from Perth summer heat
Minimum pot year 5: 90L pot
Time to fruit age: 2-3 years from a grafted plant.
The Reed is a Type A pollinator. This is handy because it can help set fruit on Type B trees like Bacon or Sharwil. One of the best things about it is how long the fruit stays on the tree. You can leave them hanging for months and just pick them as you need them. They do not go mushy quickly and have a thick skin that protects the fruit from stings and bumps.
Interesting Notes:
The fruit is so big you might only need half for a meal. Because the tree is more compact than other avocados, it is easier to net against birds. It handles our sandy soils well as long as you add plenty of organic matter and keep the water up during the hot months.
