Botanical Name: Passiflora tarminiana or mollissima.
Common Names: Banana Passionfruit, Curuba, Tumbo
The Banana Passionfruit vine is a vigorous beauty that will happily cover a fence or trellis in your Perth backyard. It pumps out elongated, yellow fruit that look a bit like small bananas. The pulp is sweet, tangy, and perfect for smoothies or eating straight off the vine. It is a fantastic climber for covering a shed or a patio roof.
Features:
Ideal prune height range: Needs a strong fence or trellis, let it climb! Prune in spring to keep it tidy.
pH growing conditions: Prefers well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soil.
Shade or full sun: Full sun is best for a big haul of fruit. It tolerates light shade.
Not recommended for pots. Needs to go in the ground.
Time to fruit age: Can fruit within 12 to 18 months in good conditions.
This vine is tough and enjoys the warm Perth climate, but you need to give it a good drink in our hot, dry summers. It produces beautiful pink, hanging, trumpet-like flowers that are a real showstopper. It is frost-tender, so it loves our warm metro spot.
Interesting Notes:
The fruit is at its best when the skin turns fully yellow or orange. Give the fruit a little squeeze—it should feel slightly soft when ripe. This vine is a super fast grower, so give it a good, strong structure to climb right from the start.
This one is a great choice if you want a tropical passionate climber that actually handles the Perth heat.
