Botanical Name: Eugenia anthropophaga
Common Names: Banana Pitanga, Pitanga-bananinha
The Banana Pitanga, from Brazil, is a top little backyard fruit tree. It’s bright yellow, long and a bit flat, looking like a mini banana, but it has a mildly sweet and mostly tangy taste, like a mix of passion fruit and a ripe apricot. It's a proper standout for the collectors. Most aligned in close relation to the pitangatuba.
Features:
Ideal prune height range: 2-4m (Grows as a small tree or bushy shrub)
pH growing conditions: Prefers well-draining, slightly acidic soil.
Shade or full sun: Full sun to part shade.
Minimum pot year 5: 40L pot (Works a treat in containers).
Time to fruit age: 2-3 years from planting.
This beauty is a compact grower with dense, dark green leaves. It gives you an early crop, often fruiting in a couple of years. It likes a warm, humid summer and regular watering, but it seems to handle a dry spell too, being from coastal Brazil. A low maintenance tree that's worth the fuss.
Interesting Notes:
The fruit is high in Vitamin C and has been used in folk medicine for things like gut issues and fevers. It’s got that unique shape, which is why everyone wants one. Makes a lovely jam or a zesty juice.
A super rare one for the serious collector. It’s a great small tree for pots or a garden feature.
