Product Details
Bignay is a tropical fruit tree grown for its long clusters of red berries that taste like a mix of cranberry and grape. The tree is fast-growing, evergreen, and works well as a shade tree, hedge, or food forest layer. Fruit ripens unevenly on the bunch, so you can harvest over time. It's used fresh, in jam, or to make a deep red wine or vinegar. Native to Southeast Asia, bignay thrives in Perth’s warmth and handles a range of soils if given compost and mulch.

Features:

Ideal prune height: 2–4 m

pH range: 5.5–7.5

Sun preference: Full sun to part shade

Minimum pot size year 5: 35 L

Time to fruit: 3–5 years from seed

Harvest period: Summer to early autumn

Notable traits: Fast-growing, ornamental fruit, wine-grade berries, multi-use tree

Bignay likes regular water in the first year, then becomes fairly drought-hardy once settled. It’s better in the ground but can do well in large pots. Can be shaped to size with pruning. Plant in full sun for best fruit, though partial shade won’t stop it growing strong.

Great for tropical-themed gardens, permaculture zones, and home wine-makers. A rare one in WA—grab it while it’s in stock.
