Black Sicilian is a tough and reliable fig that loves the hot, dry summers in Perth. It produces small to medium fruit with deep purple-black skin and a rich, strawberry-red center. The flavor is very sweet and jammy, making it a top pick for eating fresh off the tree or drying for snacks.

Black Sicilian trees are hardy and deciduous, losing their leaves in winter to handle the cold. They often produce two crops a year. The first small crop arrives in early summer, followed by the main heavy crop from February to April. This variety is self-fertile and handles Perth’s sandy soils well if you add plenty of compost and mulch to keep the roots cool.
Interesting Notes:
The fruit is ready to pick when it sags on the stem and feels soft to a gentle squeeze. Figs do not ripen once picked, so wait for that perfect droop. The dark skin is thin and edible, packed with fiber and antioxidants.
This variety is great for small backyards or large pots because it responds well to heavy pruning.
It is a classic Mediterranean fruit that feels right at home in WA.
