Common Names: Borojo, Almirajo
Borojo is a uncommon tropical small tree originating in the wet tropics of Ecuador and Colombia. It is a shade-tolerant tree that produces large, round fruit weighing up to 1kg each. The fruit has a sweet but tangy and aromatic flavour, often likened to a plum with vanilla overtones. The texture is smooth and melting, making it a prized addition to any exotic collection.
Features:
Ideal prune height range: 2-3m
pH growing conditions: 5.0 to 6.5
Shade or full sun: Best in partial shade; well suited to food forest design
Minimum pot year 5: 75L pot
Time to fruit age: 4-6 years from seed
Borojo trees require high rainfall and warm temperatures to thrive. The roots cannot tolerate drying out, so consistent watering is a must. The fruit can take up to a year to ripen on the tree, eventually turning brown and falling off when ready. These trees are either male or female, which becomes evident once the tree begins to flower.
Interesting Notes:
The fruit is famous for being packed with B vitamins and is often used in juices or jams for a natural energy boost. Because the trees are dioecious, planting multiple trees is recommended to ensure you have both a male and female for fruit production. It is a lush, deep green tree that adds a true tropical feel to a protected garden.
