The Canary Island Strawberry Tree (Arbutus canariensis) stands out from its close cousin, the Irish Strawberry Tree (Arbutus unedo), with its larger, glossier leaves, smoother peeling red-orange bark, and a more elegant tree-like form. While the Irish type is more shrubby, the Canary Island version is prized for its ornamental beauty, also hardy, growing taller and developing a striking trunk over time. Its fruits are similar—round, orange-red, and mildly sweet—but A. canariensis typically produces larger flowers and fruit with a cleaner flavour and less grit. Ideal for Perth’s Mediterranean climate, it offers both edible fruit and year-round visual appeal, making it a standout choice for collectors and landscape designers alike.
