Price will increase quickly until reaches retail pricing. The cashew is fairly tropical, loves the heat, not Perth's winter.
It is famous for the kidney shaped nut that grows outside of a bright red or yellow fruit called a cashew apple. While they usually grow in the tropics, you can grow them in Perth if you give them a warm, sheltered spot away from the wind. It is a fast growing tree that looks great and gives you a harvest no one else on the street will have.
Features:
Ideal prune height range: 3-5m
pH growing conditions: 5.5 to 7.0 (loves sandy soil)
Shade or full sun: somewhat shaded (needs heat to fruit).
Minimum pot year 5: 60L pot
Time to fruit age: 3-5 years from seed
Cashews have big, leathery green leaves and pink flowers that smell lovely. They are very tough and can handle dry spells once they are settled in. You need to be careful when harvesting because the shell around the nut has a sap that can burn your skin. The cashew apple is actually edible too! It is juicy and sweet but does not last long, so you have to eat it straight from the tree.
Interesting Notes:
The cashew apple has five times more Vitamin C than an orange. Most people don't know that the nut is actually the seed of the fruit. In some countries, they use the shells for car brakes because the oil inside is so heat resistant. It is related to the mango and the pistachio, which is why it thrives in our sandy Perth dirt.
This is a rare find for a Perth garden and a must for any serious fruit collector.
