These trees are deciduous, so they drop their leaves in winter to sleep before pushing out new growth in spring. They have big, velvety green leaves that look great in a tropical garden. Fino de Jete is self fertile but you get more fruit if you help it out with a bit of hand pollination. It handles our sandy soil well if you add plenty of organic matter and keep the mulch thick.
Interesting Notes:
Cherimoyas are often called the queen of fruits because they taste so good. Mark Twain even said they were the most delicious fruit known to men. The skin has a cool scale pattern that looks like a reptile, but inside it is pure white sweetness.
Origins
Cherimoya is native to the Andes Mountains in South America. It originally grew in the highland valleys of Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia.
The name comes from the Quechua word chirimuya, which means cold seeds. This is because the tree loves the cool, high altitudes of the mountains rather than the hot tropical lowlands.
The fruit was so popular that it spread across Central America long ago. Recent research even suggests its genetic roots might go back as far as Guatemala and Honduras before humans moved it south. Nowadays, it grows all over the world in places with mild winters, including Spain, California, and right here in Australia.
This variety is a winner for anyone starting a home orchard or food forest in WA.
