Common Names: Chilean Wine Palm, Coquito Palm
The Chilean wine palm grows slowly but massive. It comes from the dry hills of Chile and loves the weather in Perth. The coolest thing about this palm is the fruit. It grows mini coconuts that look and taste exactly like real coconuts. These little treats are called coquitos. You can crack them open and eat the white bit inside.
This tree takes its time to grow, but it is worth the wait for a garden giant that gives you snacks.

Ideal prune height range: 15-25m
pH growing conditions: 6.0 to 7.5

These palms are tough and do not mind the cold or the heat. They need plenty of space because the trunk gets very thick as they age. Make sure you plant it in soil that lets water drain away. It is a set and forget plant once it gets through its first few summers. You will need a lot of patience since it grows slowly, but it is basically a living heirloom for your backyard.
Interesting Notes:
People used to cut these trees down to get sweet sap for syrup, but now they are protected. The mini coconuts are a big hit with kids who love hunting for them on the ground. It is like a coconut tree that shrunk in the wash. If you plant one today, you are giving a cool gift to people in the future.
