Botanical Name: Coffea arabica
Common Name: Arabica Coffee Plant
Ever wanted to brew your own morning cup? This is the one. It is a lovely evergreen shrub with glossy, dark green leaves. It gives you white, jasmine-scented flowers, followed by bright red berries. Each berry has two beans waiting inside. Fruit is edible and tea leaves make tea too!
Features:
Best in light shade, avoid harsh afternoon sun until after 5 years.
Needs rich, well-draining soil. Acidic soil best.
Water when top soil feels dry, but do not let it sit in water.
Likes high humidity, so keep it happy in a warm, sheltered spot. Excellent indoor plant.
Can grow to 2-3m in the ground, but stays smaller in a pot.
Interesting Notes:
It is a slow grower but very rewarding. In Perth, it loves a spot with filtered light and protection from strong winds. You can grow it in a pot as a feature or in the garden if you have the right spot. It is a must-have for any coffee lover or rare plant collector.
