Common Names: Dwarf Tamarillo, Tree Tomato, Tamarillo Amarillo
Dwarf Tamarillo is a fast growing small tree that produces heaps of golden fruit. It stays much smaller than the standard version which makes it perfect for windier spots or smaller yards. The fruit is sweet and tangy and you can eat it straight with a spoon or toss it into a summer fruit salad.
Features:
Ideal prune height range: 1.5-2m
pH growing conditions: 5.5 to 6.5
Shade or full sun: Full sun but needs protection from hot wind
Minimum pot year 5: 45L pot
Time to fruit age: 1-2 years from seed
Tamarillos love rich soil and plenty of water during the dry months. They have large soft leaves that look great in a tropical garden. Because they are shorter than the standard tree they are much easier to manage and less likely to blow over in a storm. They are heavy feeders so give them some good compost and mulch to keep them happy.
Interesting Notes:
The yellow variety is usually sweeter and less acidic than the red ones. The fruit is packed with vitamins and minerals to keep you healthy. It is one of the quickest fruit trees to get a harvest from and you will often see fruit in the first or second year.
This tree is a must have for anyone who wants quick results in a small space.
