Botanical Name: Momordica cochinchinensis
Common Names: Gac Fruit, Baby Jackfruit, Spiny Bitter Gourd, Sweet Gourd
Gac fruit is a prized tropical vine native to Southeast Asia that grows surprisingly well in Perth’s warm climate. The plant produces striking spiky orange-red fruits known for their rich, mildly sweet flavour and bright red aril, which is traditionally used to colour and flavour rice dishes. It is a fast-growing perennial vine that dies back to its tuberous root system during cold winter spells and shoots back strongly once warm spring weather returns.
Features:
Ideal prune height range: 2-4m (needs trellis support)
pH growing conditions: 6.0 to 7.0
Shade or full sun: Full sun to partial shade in Perth Metro
Minimum pot year 5: 50L pot
Time to fruit age: 1-2 years from established seedling or vine
Gac fruit vines love warm weather, regular feeding, and well-draining soil rich in organic matter. They are heavy climbers, making them perfect for growing over fences, arbours, or sturdy trellises. While the vine prefers consistent moisture during the summer growth spurt, it requires reduced watering during winter dormancy to protect the root tuber.
Interesting Notes:
Gac fruit is renowned as a superfruit due to its exceptionally high levels of antioxidants, beta-carotene, and lycopene. The bright red seed membrane is traditionally cooked with sticky rice (Xoi Gac) to bring good fortune and vibrant natural colour to celebratory meals.
This exotic vine is a fantastic addition for rare fruit enthusiasts and permaculture gardens looking for unique perennial food crops.
