Botanical Name: Averrhoa carambola
Common Names: Giant Siam Starfruit, Siam Carambola
Giant Siam is a spectacular starfruit variety known for producing massive, high-quality fruit. It grows into a handsome, compact tree with dense foliage, making it a highly ornamental addition to a protected garden. The fruit is significantly larger than standard varieties, glowing a deep orange-yellow when fully ripe, with a sweet, crisp, and exceptionally juicy crunch that has very little acidity.
Features:
Ideal prune height range: 3-4m
pH growing conditions: 5.5 to 6.5
Shade or full sun: Full sun, but protect from strong winds
Minimum pot year 5: 50L pot.
Time to fruit age: 1-2 years for grafted trees
Giant Siam thrives in a warm, sheltered spot that mimics a humid microclimate. While it handles the heat well, protecting the tree from dry, blasting winds is essential to prevent leaf scorch and fruit drop. It loves regular deep watering and heavy mulching through the summer months, and it responds beautifully to being grown against a sunny wall or within a dense planting setup.
Interesting Notes:
The sheer size of the fruit makes Giant Siam a real showstopper for rare fruit collectors. When sliced, the enormous star shapes create an incredible look on platters, and the sweet, low-acid flavour profile means you can eat them straight off the tree like an apple.
