Japanese Pagoda Tree is a stunning deciduous shade tree native to East Asia that copes well with Perth’s hot summers. It puts on a show in late summer with huge sprays of fragrant creamy white flowers when most other trees have finished blooming. It is ideal for suburban backyards, streetscapes, or large gardens where you want a tough shade tree with year round interest.

Japanese Pagoda Trees are fast growers once their roots settle in. They form a wide rounded canopy with fine feather-like leaves that filter harsh summer sunlight nicely. The late summer flowers drop down to form hanging seed pods that look like strings of beads. Once established, this tree handles heat, urban pollution, and dry spells without breaking a sweat.

Interesting Notes:

Despite the common name, it is originally native to China and Korea, but earned its fame being planted around Buddhist temples in Japan.

The flowers and unopened buds have a long history of use in traditional teas and remedies, making it a hit with collectors of historic botanical plants.
