Product Details
The Japanese Raisin Tree is a rare fruiting curiosity that grows into a handsome shade tree with edible stem tips that taste like sweet dried fruit. Instead of eating the fruit, you nibble on the swollen stalks (called peduncles) after they ripen—chewy, sweet, and raisin-like with a hint of spice. It’s deciduous, fast-growing once established, and drought-tolerant in full sun. A beautiful conversation piece and highly productive in warm climates like Perth.

Features:

Ideal prune height: 3–6 m

pH range: 6.0–7.5

Sun preference: Full sun

Minimum pot size year 5: 50 L or plant in-ground

Time to fruit: 4–6 years from seed

Harvest period: Late summer

Notable traits: Edible peduncles, shade tree, rare and unusual, drought-tolerant once mature

Start in well-drained soil with compost. Young trees need summer water but become drought-tough with age. Mulch well. Best results in a sunny, open spot. Can be pruned to size but naturally forms a wide, spreading canopy. Wind-hardy once mature.

Hard to find and full of charm, this is a great pick for collectors and food forest growers. Limited release—grab one while they’re in.
