Jarrah trees are tough and drought-tolerant once established in local sandy or gravelly soils. They produce beautiful fluffy white flowers from spring through summer, providing a vital source of nectar for native bees and birds. While young trees appreciate regular watering during their first couple of summers, established specimens require minimal maintenance.
Interesting Notes:
Jarrah wood is world-famous for its incredible durability and rich, dark red timber.
The tree plays a key role in Southwest Australia's forest ecosystems and has many uses.
Jarrah has a rich history of traditional Indigenous Noongar medicinal uses, alongside a few edible applications and a globally recognized honey yield.
Medicinally, the leaves were traditionally crushed into an antibacterial poultice for wounds and skin infections, or steamed to clear head colds and sinus congestion. The sticky red gum resin, known as kino, served as an astringent and was packed into dental cavities to ease toothache, or dissolved in warm water to soothe stomach upsets. Smoke from burning the wood was also used as a natural disinfectant.
While the tree doesn't produce an edible fruit, its white summer blossoms yield abundant nectar. Traditionally, these flowers were soaked in water to create a sweet drink. Today, that nectar forms the basis of world-famous Jarrah honey, a dark, low-GI honey prized for its medical-grade antimicrobial and antibacterial properties that rival Manuka.
