Common Names: Kary Starfruit, Kari Carambola
Kary is an exceptional starfruit variety that handles cooler conditions far better than most tropicals. It has a beautiful weeping habit and is highly precocious, meaning this grafted tree will often start producing large, heavy crops within its first few years, upton 3 crops a year. The fruit is bright golden-yellow, incredibly juicy, very sweet, and contains only a few seeds, making it a top tier selection for fresh eating or juicing.
Features:
Ideal prune height range: 2-4m. Naturally semi dwarf.
pH growing conditions: 6.0 to 7.0
Shade or full sun: Full sun, but protect from strong winds and harsh frost
Minimum pot year 5: 50L pot
Time to fruit age: 1-2 years for grafted trees
Kary is famous for its heavy production, often pushing out multiple crops a year when happy. It shows excellent cold tolerance compared to other starfruit varieties, making it much easier to keep thriving through a cooler winter. Young trees can have quite delicate foliage and might drop a few leaves when moved or stressed, but they bounce back quickly once settled into a sunny, well-draining spot with regular water.
Interesting Notes:
The unique star-shaped slices make this fruit an instant favourite for kids and a stunning garnish for salads or drinks. Because these are grafted, you skip the long childhood wait of a seedling and get heavy clusters of sweet fruit on a compact, backyard-friendly tree very quickly.
