Kohala is a high-yielding longan variety known for producing clusters of sweet, juicy fruit with a distinct aromatic flavour. Originating from Hawaii, this heavy-cropping tropical fruit tree is hardier than the lychee and adapts well to Perth's warm climate when given wind protection. It makes an excellent addition to backyard orchards for anyone looking to harvest high-quality exotic fruit.

Kohala longan trees are attractive evergreen trees featuring dense foliage and seasonal sprays of small flowers followed by round, tan-skinned fruit. They prefer free-draining sandy loam soil and benefit from consistent moisture during summer. Young trees require dappled shade or protection from extreme afternoon heat until established, after which they thrive in full sun. Regular light pruning helps manage canopy size and improves fruit yield.

Interesting Notes:
Kohala longan fruit is rich in vitamin C and antioxidants. Thinning up to half of the flowering clusters early in the season encourages larger, higher-quality fruit.

Longans are closely related to lychees and rambutan, but they are generally tougher, more cold-tolerant, and less prone to fruit fly attack in Western Australia.
