Common Names: Twisted Cempedak, Leopardskin Cempedak
Botanical Name: Artocarpus integer
We have a rare treat for Artocarpus fans.
Sourced from the tropics of FNQ and are now available for Perth growers who want something truly different for their greenhouse. Perfect for gardeners in subtropical and tropical northern WA.
Unlike the common thick-skinned jackfruit, these are refined, thin-skinned beauties that eat like a dream.
Known for its irregular, "twisted" shape, this variety is often called the "Queen of Cempedaks." It produces massive, high-quality fruits with a sensational, honey-like sweetness.
Named for its unique smooth skin that takes on a spotted, leopard-like pattern as it ripens. It looks remarkably like its cousin, the Breadfruit, but hide a rich, sweet secret inside.
Features:
Ideal prune height range: 3-5m (easily kept smaller in a Perth greenhouse)
pH growing conditions: 5.5 to 6.5
Shade or full sun: Full sun (but provide 50% shade for the first 2 summers in Perth)
Minimum pot year 5: 60L-75L pot
Time to fruit age: 3-6 years from seed
The Eating Experience
These fruits are a world apart from store-bought Jackfruit.
Thin Skin: So thin you can practically peel it like a banana.
Melt-in-mouth: The arils are incredibly soft, juicy, and sweet with no "rag" or messy latex when fully ripe.
Refined Aroma: While some Cempedaks are as pungent as Durian, these varieties have a much milder, pleasant scent while keeping that deep, complex flavour.
Pro Tip: If picked early, place them in a sealed bag with ripe fruit skins—they can ripen and be ready to eat in just 24 hours.
Interesting Notes:
The Artocarpus family is full of surprises. These trees are evergreen and make beautiful, lush additions to a food forest. In Perth, they love a hot, humid spot but need protection from our dry, scorching summer winds. Keep the mulch thick and the water consistent. Best in a permanent greenhouse.
