Botanical Name: Diospyros nigra
Common Names: Black Sapote, Maher Black Sapote, Chocolate Pudding Fruit
Maher black sapote is a fantastic dwarf selection of the chocolate pudding fruit that handles perth conditions well when given afternoon shade.
It produces huge, flattened fruit with rich, sweet dark pulp that tastes just like chocolate pudding, without the excess seeds found in standard seedlings. Its compact habit makes it a brilliant choice for backyard orchards, food forests, or large containers.
Features:
Ideal prune height range: 2-3m
pH growing conditions: 6.0 to 7.0
Shade or full sun: Prefers full sun to dappled shade, with protection from harsh perth afternoon summer sun
Minimum pot year 5: 45L pot
Time to fruit age: 2-3 years (grafted)
Maher trees grow as compact evergreen specimens with glossy, dark green leaves. They produce small fragrant flowers followed by large green fruit that ripen and soften off the tree into a dark, creamy chocolate paste. The tree is tough once established and enjoys generous water during hot perth summers alongside organic mulch to keep the roots cool. Maher can be grown in large tubs or directly in rich soil.
Interesting Notes:
The flesh is low in fat, high in vitamin c, and naturally sweet, making it a healthy substitute for chocolate in smoothies, mousses, and ice creams.
Maher is prized by growers because it stays much smaller than seedling trees while producing larger, superior quality fruit with very few seeds.
