Maprang, Mango Plum

Seedlings of Mayongchid.  An improved and better version of a normal maprang. It is a bit bigger and has a much better balance of flavours.

It tastes like a mix between a sweet mango and a juicy plum or apricot. While a normal maprang can be very sweet or very sour, the Mayongchid is sweet with just a tiny bit of tang. It also has a nice flowery smell that regular maprangs don't really have.

Often called mango plum, maprang, or marian plum, (Bouea macrophylla) is a mango relative rare for Perth, fruiting tree producing small, juicy orange fruits with a flavour that tastes like mango crossed with sweet apricot. The tree itself is elegant, evergreen, and manageable in pots or ground. The fruits are fragrant, sweet, and melt-in-the-mouth when ripe. Grown widely in Southeast Asia, this tree is suited to home growers wanting something different, beautiful, and delicious.

In Perth, mango plum will need protection from frost while young. Choose a warm microclimate or grow in pots to move during under warmer shade in winter. Likes rich, well-draining soil and regular summer watering. Once established, it becomes quite tough and can handle our dry spells with care.
