Mexican Elderberry

Common Names: Mexican Elderberry, Blue Elderberry, Tapiro

Mexican elderberry is a fast growing small tree that handles the Perth heat beautifully. It has bright green leaves and bursts into large clusters of creamy white flowers from spring to summer. These flowers turn into big bunches of dark blue berries covered in a silvery powder. It is a tough, versatile plant that brings heaps of beneficial insects and birds to your garden while providing plenty of shade.

Interesting Notes:

The cooked ripe berries make amazing jams, pies, syrups, and home-brewed wine. The flowers can also be used to make refreshing herbal teas or cordials. Be sure to only eat the berries fully ripe and cooked, as raw green berries and other parts of the plant are not edible.
